The launch of the Pixel 9 and Pixel 9 Pro will without a doubt have a heavy AI focus. Google just spent an entire Google I/O talking nothing but AI and the applications they believe will arrive in the near future. There’s just no way they wouldn’t follow that up with more AI chatter around their own flagship devices. The Pixel 9 launch will also be an AI launch.

A part of that launch could be the first arrival of “Google AI,” according to a new report. Google AI will essentially be the name for all of the AI magic a Pixel can do, because underneath Google AI is Gemini, the AI that so many Android phones already have access to.

A screenshot shared by Android Authority shows this Google AI with a set of features that includes Gemini, Circle to Search, Add Me, Screenshots, and Studio. Those final 3 in the list are what may be new when Google AI launches.

What do all of these new features do? To be honest, we don’t really know, but this is what the screenshot says:

Add Me: Make sure everyone’s included in a group photo
Screenshots: Find the info you need from screenshots
Studio: You imagine it. Pixel creates it.

Because we have no other info to go on, everyone is just guessing at what these could be. The “Add Me” feature sounds like Google might cook up a way to include people in a photo that may have been around an event, yet missed out on the big group photo. That’s odd and creepy, but maybe it’ll be great? As for “Screenshots,” this could be a feature where Google looks through all of the screenshots you’ve ever taken and finds data from them, as well as related data from the time you took the screenshot to return results. And finally, “Studio” could be a built-in image or video generation tool beyond just the wallpaper maker that Pixel phones have now.

I’m still processing these ideas while not trying to get too caught up in our guesses being correct. The general takeaway here should just be that the Pixel 9 is going to introduce a blanket AI term called “Google AI.” Google can do a lot with that.

A cryptic teaser posted to Instagram suggests that DJI, a company most well-known for making drones and cameras, is expanding into making pedal-powered transportation methods. Both DJI and a new brand called Amflow Bikes have started hyping a new electric bike product on social media, but we’ll have to wait until later to see what it really is.

All we’ve seen so far is a a small animation that shows the central e-bike mechanism that holds the pedals to the frame, and in this case, they also appear to be attached to a small electric motor. It’s likely this outdoors focused E-bike that leaked a few days ago, but only time will tell.

While this seems like a move out of left field for the company, DJI has traditionally been good at taking a core component of one of its products and using it across various industries. Using cameras as an example, the company got better at making drones with stabilized camera systems, and then it was able to break out the stabilization tech into its own product, the gimbal.

Taking that same logic, we’ve seen DJI expand into portable backup batteries, so more battery-powered machines makes sense as a next step. What will be more interesting to see is if DJI makes a full E-bike or if the company attempts to sell this component to others to be used, like its FPV drone equipment. The Amflow Instagram only has 12 posts on it, which suggests to me that it will be a new sub-brand under DJI, but all will be revealed today at the EuroBike 2024 event. DJI is scheduled to make an announcement at 3AM ET/12AM PT.

Telegram is implementing a new paywall feature for content creators, allowing them to place photos and videos behind a price tag. Snaps, Telegram, snaps!

There’s more than just getting that bag for creators, though. Telegram also announced the mini app bar, with users now able to collapse mini apps into a bar at the bottom of the screen. With this, you’ll be able to respond to messages or open other mini apps, then return to a mini app without waiting for it to load again. Extremely handy.

Other new features for the June update (yes, June) includes the ability to search through stories based on hashtags and location, plus a new Link Widget option for stories.

Last year, Netflix quietly axed its $9.99/month ‘Basic’ membership. This meant that new and returning subscribers were suddenly unable to access the streamer’s lowest-cost ad-free tier. However, active Basic members were able to continue paying $9.99/month, with Netflix saying it would be phased out “in the near future.”

Now, over one year later, Netflix is finally doing just that. On Reddit, several Basic plan users in Canada and the UK report that they’ve received messages from the streamer that their “last day to watch Netflix” is July 13th. (You can tell the original poster, u/BritestBowlingBall in the below Reddit thread is in Canada based on the listed prices of the Netflix subscriptions.)

On that date, they’ll have to subscribe to one of Netflix’s three other plans:

Standard with ads: $5.99/month, 1080p, “great” video quality, simultaneous viewing on two screens, no downloads

Premium: $20.99, 4K (Ultra HD) +HDR, “best” video quality, simultaneous viewing on four screens, downloads included

Unfortunately, this change means that all Canadians will now have to pay either $16.49/month or $20.99/month for Netflix without ads. (That said, the streamer says the lower-cost ad tier has proven quite popular, having reached over 40 million users worldwide.)

Google is launching a slate of new products in August, and while we’re all excited about the hardware, the new Pixel smartphones also feature new ‘Google AI‘ software.

According to Android Authority, which learned about the AI features from a source inside Google, the company will market its new set of machine learning features under the ‘Google AI’ branding. Google AI will sport new and old features, including Circle to Search, Gemini, and a feature called ‘Studio,’ which is likely a generative AI image generator similar to what’s available on Apple’s Image Playground or what many Android OEMs have put together.

Another feature called ‘Add Me’ will also be available on Pixel handsets. There isn’t any information about it, but it seems like an upgraded version of ‘Best Take,’ which ensures everyone in a group picture looks their best.

According to the leak, there will be a ‘Screenshots’ feature that lets users search their screenshots for information. You’ll be able to use AI to summarize your new and existing screenshots and ask questions about them. This will only work with screenshots captured on your handset, and when you do it, Google AI will add a bit of metadata, like app names and web links.

Google is also reportedly working on a Microsoft Recall-like feature that will manually save everything on your screen. This is similar to what Motorola is working on with its Moto AI.

We’ll likely learn more about Google AI and more on August 13th, when the company officially launches its Pixel 9 series. Hopefully, Google AI will be able to compete with the likes of Moto AI, Apple AI and whatever Samsung is working on.

It looks like some Pixel 6 users are having problems with their devices.

According to reports on the Google support forums and Reddit, users with either a Pixel 6, Pixel 6 Pro, or Pixel 6a are having problems after factory resetting their devices. After the reset, users see a new error message during the boot and can’t load Android. Other users are reporting “unable to enable ext4 verity” because of a missing “tune2fs” file.

Users still have problems even when using the Android Flash or Pixel Repair tools. However, according to reports, Google knows about the issue. Android Authority states that a comment from a Platinum Product Expert indicates that the team is investigating the issue. However, the company hasn’t made any official announcements.

So, if you’re a Pixel 6 user, I’d avoid factory resetting your handset. This isn’t for all users, but I still wouldn’t take the chance until Google pushes a proper fix.

Tesla has shared that it built 410,831 vehicles in Q2, which runs from March until June, and delivered 443,956.

While these are huge numbers compared to Tesla a few years ago, the company is down roughly 4.76 percent compared to Q2 2023, when it delivered 466,140 vehicles. This news follows Tesla’s first-ever sales drop as more and more automakers release competitive EVs, seemingly slowing the growth of the American EV company. A report from The Verge clarifies that Tesla had 80 percent of the U.S. EV market share in 2020, and it’s now down to 50 percent, at least in the U.S.

A report from a website called Drive Tesla Canada claims that similar drops are happening in Canada. For a few years, Tesla represented around 60 percent of EV sales in Ontario and B.C., but now it’s down to 40 percent.

This news comes as Tesla recently revealed a new version of its usually popular Model 3. You would expect a model refresh to help drive sales, but since not much was changed, it appears that consumers haven’t reacted quite like the company was hoping for.

Tesla is slated to reveal its robot-taxi car on August 8th, so perhaps a big improvement in self-driving tech will help push the company higher in popularity, but I expect that since Elon Musk promised all Teslas would be robo-taxis a few years ago, this will come across as more of a loss than a win for Tesla.

Overall, it’s not that concerning to see the popularity of Tesla start to level out. The company was on a successful track, but as more EVs hit the market at affordable prices, it is bound to lower the overall popularity of the once-novel EV maker.
